They probably managed people, oversaw a budget, and other things which translate to the workplace. Someone throwing themselves into the cause & organizing the entire project is impressive. It really depends on what you did in the volunteer job. There are plenty of paid jobs which use fewer skills than some volunteer ones. It's volunteer work and isn't the same thing as working in paid labor. But it doesn't mean you get to leave your 1 hour of crossing guard duty on your resume.

WHich adds up to one full time position (1500 hours). Sure, but that could be true if 1500 parents each donated 1 hour each of crossing guard duty during the year.

If women stopped doing it (and let's be honest it is mostly women who do volunteer work), you can bet organizations (schools, hospitals, suicide lines, rape counselor orgs, Red Cross, orgs that use pro bono attorneys) would need to replace that work with paid labor. Do you not understand this? Like a PP said, someone who tried to pass off volunteer work as interchangeable with paid labor would be a red flag.
Also included learning I had done (cle since I am lawyer) to demonstrate that I had been using my brain during the 6 years I was out. Your volunteer work is work!! Fwiw I included my volunteer stuff on resume when I re-entered paid labor market. Focus on skills you brought to bear, or enhanced.
